Description

Alphagan® Z eye drops are manufactured by Allergan. The active substance comprised in Alphagan® Z is Brimonidine, an alpha adrenergic agonist and ocular hypotensive agent.

Indications:

- high intraocular pressure (IOP) due to open-angle glaucoma (also known as chronic glaucoma);

- high intraocular pressure (IOP) due to other eye conditions (eye trauma, pseudoexfoliation syndrome, pigment dispersion syndrome and corneal arcus).

MOA (mechanism of action):

Brimonidine is a selective alpha2-agonist which acts a strong hypotensive agent without causing mydriasis. It lowers IOP by reducing aqueous humor synthesis and increasing uveoscleral aqueous humor outflow. In a gel formulation, Brimonidine may be effective against erythema due to its vasoconstricting properties.

Dosage

For increased IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension

Adults: instill 1 drop (Brimonidine 0,2%, 0,1%, or 0,15% ophthalmic solution) in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.

Children over 2 years: instill 1 drop of Brimonidine 0,2% ophthalmic solution in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.

Brimonidine may be used concomitantly with other ophthalmic medications for lowering IOP. Administer each ophthalmic medication at 10-minute interval.

Precautions

Alphagan® Z eye drops are not intended for use in children under 2 years of age.

Alphagan® Z solution is for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.
