Description

Alphagan ophthalmic solution is a topical medication in the eye drops form that lowers the higher tension inside the eyes. It contains Brimonidine as an active substance. This is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist from the class of sympathomimetic agents.

Indications:

- elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to open-angle glaucoma (also known as chronic glaucoma);

- elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to other eye conditions (eye trauma, pseudoexfoliation syndrome, pigment dispersion syndrome and corneal arcus).

MOA (mechanism of action):

Brimonidine is an ocular hypotensive agent. It acts as a powerful hypotensive agent without leading to mydriasis. Brimonidine decreases IOP by reducing aqueous humor synthesis and increasing uveoscleral aqueous humor outflow. The gel formulation containing Brimonidine may be effective against erythema through direct vasoconstriction.

Dosage

For increased IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension

Adults: instill 1 drop (Brimonidine 0,2%, 0,1%, or 0,15% ophthalmic solution) in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.

Children over 2 years: instill 1 drop of Brimonidine 0,2% ophthalmic solution in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.

Brimonidine may be used concomitantly with other ophthalmic medications for lowering IOP. Administer each ophthalmic medication at 10-minute interval.
